Hello and welcome back to my math blog! It has been a while since we last talked about math. For this blog post, we will be looking at two math topics-Ratios and Proportional Thinking, and Number Sense and Numeration. We had a few presenters, including myself, showcasing these mathematical topics.
Ratios and Proportional Thinking:
Google defines ratios as the following: "the quantitative relation between two amounts showing the number of times one value contains or is contained within the other."
In simpler terms, it is a way to say how much of one thing there is to another thing (e.g. 5:1, 5 to 1).
Here are some quick videos describing ratios and proportions:

Emily gave an awesome presentation on ratios and proportional thinking and how to apply it to everyday context. Her presentation was around using COOKIES! She got two volunteers to play with cookies. One volunteer was tasked to stacking cookies to make a tower, while the other laid them out. The question "which volunteer had more cookies?'- with proportional thinking, we as a class were able to figure out the volunteer that did not build the tower had more cookies.
Emily's presentation also had a "Jigsaw" activity where we figured out ratio question within our own pods first and then added them onto a class data sheet.
Integers
What are they and what do they look like? Well an integer is a whole number that can be written as a positive number, negative number or even zero- it is not FRACTION or DECIMAL
Jason's presentation had many real-world applications (temperature, money, golf, and etc.), which can be beneficial for students.
Here is a quick video showing how to subtract and add integers:
Overall, the presenters for this week gave us many cool and fun activities that we can probably do in our classrooms!
Until next time!
Daniel
